Task Summary
You have now learned how information systems are used in various business functions. Now, you need to select a contemporary information system and investigate and analyse it. Write up a report (1,500 words +/- 10%) to present your findings. In addition to the report, create a presentation as a short video to explain your findings.
Please refer to the Task Instructions for details on how to complete this task.
Context
In Module 5, you learned about how and which type of information systems are used in various business functions. You also learned about a number of contemporary and emerging information systems. In this assessment, you will explore how an information system is applied to a particular business or business function.
Task Instructions
Please follow the instructions given below to complete this assessment:
1. Create a group with three members. If you are unable to make a group of three members, then make up a pair.
2. With the help of your facilitator, choose an information system used for any business or any business function.
3. Using the internet, analyse the various aspects of the selected information system. You can ask yourself the following questions (not in any particular sequence). There is no prescribed number of questions you need to answer – this will depend on the level of investigation that you conduct on your chosen information system. You are not required to answer all these questions, nor are you limited to these only – feel free to add other questions as you see fit.
a. What type of functionality is offered by the information system?
b. What are the benefits/disadvantages of this information system for any business and/or organisation?
c. What are the reviews by end users and/or customers, of the information system (if the reviews are available on the internet)?
d. What is the cost of this information system?
e. What type of resources are required by any organisation to implement this system?
f. How does the information system work in technical terms?
g. What are the general features of this information system?
h. What are the best features?
i. Which features are not useful?
j. What gaps do you see in the information system against the business or business function that it supports?
k. What are other similar information systems in the market that provide similar solutions?
l. How the selected information system is better than its competitors?
m. Is the information system easily upgradable, implementable, customisable, etc.?
n. How can this information system be procured?
o. Is there any kind of support for this information system by its supplier?
p. How do the users or customers rate the overall quality of the system?
q. How does the information system create synergy with people?
r. Does the information system take care of the legacy data?
s. Other questions
4. Write up a report (1500 words +/- 10%) that presents your findings (check the report guidelines below).
5. OPTIONAL: Create a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation (the PowerPoint presentation should be in sync with the report).
6. Create the video. The 15-minute (+/- 10%) video should be formatted so that it can be viewed online (guidelines for preparing and submitting the video are provided below). All members of the small group should take part in the video equally – you should include an explanation of how the work was distributed in the group as part of the video introduction.
Note that your facilitator and fellow students in this subject should be able to easily access and view the video file.
Guidelines about Group Formation
Each group will consist of three students. You can only form groups within the class you are enrolled in. No inter-class groups are allowed.
Guidelines about Group Registration
The deadline for group registration is 11:45pm AEST Friday end of Module 4.2. To register your group, you are required to send your Learning Facilitator an email with “[MIS101] Group Registration” in the subject line. In the body of that email, please list the names and student ID numbers of all the members of your group. You are required to send the registration email to your facilitator before the registration deadline. After the registration deadline, the students who are not in a group will be allocated to a group by the Learning Facilitator.
Working in Groups
Here are some important tips to help when working in groups:
• Be clear about the objectives of the work for all team members to complete.
• Work in a collaborative, open and constructive manner.
• Provide and receive constructive feedback in a professional manner.
• Allocate roles, tasks and establish clear and reasonable timelines.
• Include a meeting to review progress and get feedback from the other team members.
• Allow for contingencies and issues that may arise.
• Be respectful and understand there may be times when work, family or other commitments could mean team members are not all available at the same time.
• You may wish to set up online conference meetings via platforms such as Zoom:

Throughout the trimester, the Learning Facilitator will ask for feedback about the state of health of the team. For example:
• How is the team functioning?
• Dealing with conflicts.
• Group members who have gone missing or do not participate.
• Managing timelines.
The Learning Facilitator will support students by providing advice and guidance so that each group can collaborate positively to achieve their objectives.
Report Guidelines
The report is brief (1500 words +/- 10% words) and therefore will not require and executive summary or abstract.
Title page: should include subject ID, subject name, assignment title, students’ names, students’ numbers and lecturer’s name.
Table of contents: Include all key components of this assessment.
Introduction: Also serves as your statement of purpose for the report. This means that you will tell the reader what you are going to cover in your report. You will need to inform the reader of:
i. your area of research and its context – indicate the information system you have selected
ii. the key concepts or features of the information system you will be covering in the report, and iii. what the reader can expect to find in the body of the report.
Body of the report:
Consider the suggested questions in the task instructions above and flesh out your report.
Layout:
The report should use 11-point Arial or Calibri font, should be line spaced at 1.5 for ease of reading and page numbers should be added at the bottom of each page.
If you include any diagrams, due attention should be given to pagination to avoid loss of meaning and continuity by unnecessarily splitting information over two pages. All diagrams must carry the appropriate captioning.
Conclusion: summarise the findings of the investigation.
Presentation – 15 minutes (+/- 10 %)
• Using a video tool record a 15-minute presentation of your findings.
• You can use free video tools such as Zoom and should underpin your presentation using PowerPoint.
• Be specific and clear as you will be assessed on originality and authenticity.
• Your presentation must be in a video format (mp4, MOV, etc.) for the purpose of uploading to Blackboard.
