IDEA defines the term learning disability as a " disorder in one or more of the basic psychological processes involved in understanding or in using language, spoken or written" (Turnbull, 2016).
IDEA defines the term learning disability as a " disorder in one
or more of the basic psychological processes involved in
understanding or in using language, spoken or written" (Turnbull,
2016). Communication disorders include problems related to speech,
language, and communication (Psychology Today, 2017). When we think
about this disorder, we have to understand that it may occur from
several conditions.
Individuals with learning disabilities commonly have average or above average intelligence. They almost always demonstrate low academic achievement in one or more areas and challenges in how they learn and process new information (Turnbull, 2016). Characteristics of communication disorder could limit children from following directions, pronunciation issues, or not being understood due to a stutter in their voice.
IDEA has three options for determining the presence of a learning disability: discrepancy model provides more information about the traditional nondiscriminatory evaluation procedure for identifying learning disabilities. Response to Intervention Model and Cognitive Assessment Model. Cognitive Assessment can identify students' strengths and weakness in psychological process (Turnbull, 2017).
Effective instructional strategies, supports, and services is to be consistent, demonstrate new tasks when appropriate, allow for longer response time, and repetition. At this point I do not have experience with working with a student or individual with a learning disability or communication disorder. I hope to gain the knowledge needed that I can apply once employed in this field of study. The characteristics in the reading are accurate as I can tell. I have found information that will be vital in the special education area.
